Bosnians Fend Off British To Qualify

Bosnia and Herzegovina secured their participation at EuroBasket 2015 after holding Great Britain without a score in the final four minutes for a 74-68 win in Group A of the 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Bosnians have improved to 3-0 and, although first place in the group will only be determined by the outcome of their Wednesday clash against Iceland, they have secured a finish among the six best second-placed teams of the 2nd Qualifying Round even in case of defeat on the final day.

Great Britain fell behind by as many as 12 points, 39-27, in the first half and led for less than two minutes in the entire game, but made clear to their hosts they had travelled to Sarajevo aiming to earn their first win in this campaign.

Bosnia and Herzegovina held a 41-37 advantage at the half-time break and restored their double-digit lead shortly after the break.

Mirza Teletovic hit a jumper with 6:37 remaining in the third, Elmedin Kikanovic sunk two free throws and Andrija Stipanovic, with a lay-up 4:45 from the third buzzer, brought the hosts ahead 55-44.

Great Britain however still had plenty of gas left in the tank and began to chip away at the gap, until Kieron Achara tied the scores at 63 with 8:51 remaining in the fourth.

Teletovic hit back-to-back triples to give the hosts some breathing space and, after Great Britain reduced to 69-68, he drove to the basket and finished at the rim to make it 71-68 with 3:56 left on the clock.

Great Britain missed two consecutive shots from long range and after Daniel Clark failed to score from the line, they fouled Teletovic who maintained his calm at the stripe and increased the gap to 73-68, with 2:26 remaining.

With nerves weighing heavily on both sides, every attempt to score on either end fell short, until Nemanja Gordic split two free throws 19 seconds from the buzzer to write the final score.

Teletovic once again led the way for Bosnia and Herzegovina and finished with a game-high 25 points, Marko Sutalo added 14 points and Kikanovic finished with 12 points and four rebounds.

Benjamin Mockford collected 19 points and Achara had 13 points and four boards for Great Britain in losing efforts.
