GAME REPORT

Clutch-Klepeisz Wins It For Austria

42. Thomas Klepeisz (Austria)
Thomas Klepeisz landed the killer blow for Austria

Thomas Klepeisz scored with a lay-up at the death to gift Austria an 83-81 triumph over previously unbeaten Poland at home, in a thrilling Day 3 encounter in Group C of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

Austria, Poland as well as Germany are now tied at 2-1 in the standings, while Luxembourg are bottom of the table with a 0-3 record.

The dramatic Sunday clash in the Austrian town of Schwechat featured 12 lead changes and saw the scores tied on 14 occasions, while no team led by more than seven points at any stage.

Rasid Mahalbasic went to work in the low post and pulled Austria ahead 79-77 with 1:29 left on the clock.

Poland called a time-out and drew a play for Mateusz Ponitka who tied the scores at 79 with 1:19 remaining.

The young Polish winger appeared to emerge as the hero of the night for the guests as, following a missed triple by Thomas Schreiner, he drew a foul with only 41 seconds left to play and kept his calm at the stripe, to make it 81-79 for his team.

Poland however immediately fouled Klepeisz, who also sunk both free-throws and tied the scores at 81.

Not content with that, Klepeisz dispossessed Ponitka, run down the clock and finally drove to the Polish basket and finished at the rim with just one second on the clock, for the local crowd to erupt in celebration.

Mahalbasic was superb for the winners and led the way with 24 points, five rebounds and four assists, Enis Murati chipped in with 18 points while Klepeisz had 13 points on his big night.

Aaron Cel finished with 12 points while Robert Skibniewski had 12 points and six assists for Poland in their losing effort.
