GAME REPORT

F.Y.R. of Macedonia Prevail In Overtime

8. Vojdan Stojanovski (F.Y.R. of Macedonia)
Vojdan Stojanovski had 16 points in the over-time victory for F.Y.R. of Macedonia

Marko Simonovski hit a triple two seconds from the end of overtime to lift hosts F.Y.R. of Macedonia to a dramatic 76-73 win over Belgium in their EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round Group D encounter on Sunday.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia had trailed Belgium for the first 35 minutes before clawing their way back and eking out victory in the thrilling finale.

Propelled by 15 first-half points from Axel Hervelle, Belgium enjoyed a 36-23 lead shortly before the end of the second quarter and looked in absolute control of proceedings at the half-time interval.

Bojan Trajkovski and Richard Hendriks however ignited a fantastic start to the second half for F.Y.R. of Macedonia and the hosts used a 12-2 burst to reduce the gap to 35-38 on a Trajkovski jumper, 4:41 from the end of the third.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia, whose first-half tally amounted to only 23 points, scored 22 points in the third frame and pulled within 49-48 on a Marko Simonovski triple at the start of the fourth quarter, to turn the final period of regulation into a too-close-for-comfort body combat.

The two sides traded baskets until 1:20 from the end of regulation, when Vojdan Stojanovski split two free-throws to tie the scores at 62.

As tension and fatigue took its toll on both sets of players, each team missed consecutive chances to score in the remaining 80 seconds and the game went into overtime.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia were leading 71-69 and had possession but Lionel Bosco came up with a steal and tied the scores at 71 with a lay-up, 43 seconds from the end of the extra period.

Aleksandar Kostoski replied with a lay-up of his won on the other end but, Bosco again, pulled Belgium even at 73 from the foul line with 21 seconds on the clock.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia called a time-out and Stojanovski, with a wonderful pass, set up Simonovski, who drilled the game-winner.

Stojanovski and Trajkovski paced the winners with 16 points apiece, while Kostoski had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: F.Y.R. of Macedonia vs. Belgium

Aleksandar Dzikic, F.Y.R. Of Macedonia Head Coach
"Belgium has great quality players, and they were well prepared for us. They were expecting our moves, they were predicting our plays, and they played great defence in the first half. My team has many young and unexperienced players, so they were kind of impressed at the start of the match, and that was putting some bad pressure on them. At the half-time break, I tried to calm them down, and to focus on our play. We managed to cut down our mistakes, and we played tight on defence. I want to congratulate my players on the great heart they showed. We played as a team, and we deserved the win. This is very important win for us."

Aleksandar Kostoski, F.Y.R Of Macedonia
"This was a great win for the team. No heroes, no individuals, only team, and a great one. We are working on the psychology that a compact team can win against any opponent, and this win against Belgium is a proof of that. We were tense at the beginning of the match, and we made many mistakes, but we managed to strengthen our defence, and the win came by itself. Not much time for celebration though, we are traveling to Denmark, and we have to continue to improve. The qualifications have just started."

Guy Muya, Belgium
"It was a tight game, we played a very good first half, but we missed plenty of free and open shots in the second half, and F.Y.R. of Macedonia cut the score difference. Both teams had chances to win at the end, and I think that the overall performance in the game was on a very high level. Both teams had chances to win, but they came out with the win at the end. I want to congratulate them, it was a good game. I hope we will play better and win the second match in Belgium."

Eddy Casteels Belgium Head Coach
"Congratulations to the winner, it was a very tense and interesting game. Games like this are often won on defence. We came short in that part of the game at the end, but we still had a chance to win it. I can say it is very important for us that we start coming to these countries believing we can win. We played good, we showed that we are here to win. That is why, I have to congratulate my players also."
