GAME REPORT

Georgia Shake Off Czechs For First Win

Zaza Pachulia (Georgia)
Zaza Pachulia lead the way for Georgia with 19 points

Georgia pulled away late in the fourth from the persistent Czechs in the big game on the opening day of EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round Group E to pick up a 73-62 victory at home.

Star center Zaza Pachulia scored 17 of his 19 game-high points in the first half and Georgia led 36-32 at the interval.

The Czech Republic however, with big man Patrik Auda making an impressive national team debut with 18 points, used a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter and pushed ahead, 46-43, when Ondrej Balvín converted an and-one play with 2:57 remaining in the frame.

Duda Sanadze poured in six points in quick succession to make sure the Czech lead would be short-lived but Georgia felt their guests breathing down their neck well within the fourth quarter.

Lubos Barton reduced to 58-57 with 6:54 left on the clock but Sanadze replied with his second triple and sparked a 9-0 Georgian run which Beka Burjanadze capped off with an imperial dunk in transition to give the hosts the first double-digit lead all night, 67-57, four minutes from the final buzzer.

With fatigue taking its toll, the Czechs were unable to mount a comeback in the dying minutes and Georgia managed to maintain a safe distance until the end without a huge effort.

Sanadze, Tornike Shengelia and George Tsintsadze all finished with 10 points for Georgia, the latter also dishing out 10 assists to collect an impressive double-double.

Barton, who had 16 points, was the only other Czech player apart from Auda to score in double digits.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Georgia vs. Czech Republic

KoteTugushi Georgia Assistant Coach
"Congratulations to all of Georgians for this great and important win. We started the qualifying round in a good way and I hope, we can continue like this. Today, we had more attention on Satoransky, one of the best guards in Europe. I think we played good defence and our tactic was justified. Zaza [Pachulia] was great today, and [George] Tsintsadze did his job perfectly as well, we are also satisfied with our young players, who scored just in the right times."

Ronen Ginzurg, Czech Republic Head Coach
"First of all, congratulations to Georgian National Team for this win. I think it was a great game and the atmosphere was great as well. We played 30 minutes not bad at all, but in the end we made too many mistakes, lost the ball quite often and Georgia used this chance and won the game. We missed lots of open shots, and that also was the reason for our loss. The gap is a little bit high but I hope we can manage it."

Zaza Pachulia, Georgia
"It was a tense game as we expected it to be. They made a 10-0 scoring run in the third period, but our right timeouts and changes showed good results, we didn't lose mobilisation and got back our lead. We were ready to fight for 40 minutes and we did it. What is the most important thing, we started well and finished well. Everybody played well and we all did our best to reach our goal. Today we proved, that our team always fight till the last seconds. And that's real Georgian Basketball. We may not have super stars but we know how to fight, we never give up and that's important. I am proud that I am a part of this team."

Patrik Auda, Czech Republic
"Almost the whole game was equal and tense. But in the end we lost the concentration and Georgian players managed to get leading and won. It was a great game and congratulations to Georgia."
