GAME REPORT

Romania Comeback Denies Slovaks

14. Titus Nicoara (Romania)
Titus Nicoara topped Romanian efforts with 20 points

Romania rectified a disastrous start away from home and came back from a 16-point deficit to register an 81-69 victory over Slovakia in Bratislava on Day 1 of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

Thanks to this success the Romanians are tied with Latvia at the top of Group F after the conclusion of opening day action, as both teams triumphed on the road.

The Slovaks came out guns blazing and jumped to a 25-9 lead on a Martin Bilik lay-up with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.

As Romania's second unit was introduced into the game however, the guests gradually balanced proceedings.

The Romanian bench players contributed a crucial 29 points, while Slovakia only got eight points from their second unit.

Romania's big men were also vital in the surge of the visiting team, as Titus Nicoara finished with a game-high 20 points and added eight rebounds and Vlad Moldoveanu collected 18 points and nine boards.

Slovakia were still leading 41-31 at the interval but Romania came out for the third looking like a different team and outscored their hosts 29-13 during that frame to gain control of the clash.

Moldoveanu gave Romania their first double-digit lead, 72-61, with a lay-up midway through the final frame and from then on there was no way back for the Slovaks.

Adrian Gutoaia also made an important contribution to the Romanian win and finished with 13 points, while Nenad Milosevic had 20 points and seven assists for Slovakia in a losing effort.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Slovakia vs. Romania

Titus Nicoara, Romania
"The Slovak team got 15 points ahead of us. It was a difficult game for us, but we played as a team, and we won."

Marcel Dan Tenter, Romania Head Coach
"They started very well. It was a shame, because we didn't play our own game of basketball. Then we started to play more agressively and that gave us easy points. Then we got the game under control."

Nenad Miloševič, Slovakia
"The Romanian team played a very good game. They showed they are a smart team. We started smart, but we didn´t react good to their agressive defence."

Richard Ďuriš, Slovakia Assistant Coach
"The game was tough for us. We have some health issues in our team, so we lost the rotation. We need to keep our heads up. We need to come as a team to this Qualification Round. We still have five more games to play."
