GAME REPORT

Sweden Beat Slovaks To Get Off The Mark

6. Joakim Kjellbom (Sweden)
Joakim Kjellbom finished just shy of a double-doubel for Sweden with 13 points and nine boards

Sweden prevailed 75-72 against Slovakia on the road on Sunday, in a battle between teams that were looking for their first success in Group F of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

Slovakia enjoyed a superb six-minute stretch in the opening quarter that enabled them to overcome a slow start and grab a 24-16 lead, their biggest on the night, shortly before the first buzzer.

Once Sweden however decided they were not going to be so permissive on defence, they balanced proceedings and the two opponents went into the locker rooms with the scores tied at 40.

The guests dealt the decisive blow shortly after the break.

Sweden were holding a slim 45-44 lead when Jonathan Person made back-to-back lay-ups to ignite an 11-0 run which Martin Pahlmblad capped off with a lay-up of his own, 6:05 from the end of the third quarter.

Milan Ziak, with a lay-up 5:16 from the third buzzer, stopped the rot for the Slovaks but the Swedes kept pushing hard and Dino Pita, with two free-throws 20 seconds from the end of the period, gave them a 64-48 lead.

Peter Sedmák, who was excellent for the hosts in defeat, spearheaded a Slovak revival on the offensive end in the final quarter but there was only enough time to reduce the final point differential to three points.

Pahlmblad paved the way for the Swedes with 14 points while Anton Gaddefors and Joakim Kjellbom had 13 points each, the latter also adding nine rebounds.

Sedmák finished with a game-high 23 points and Nenad Milosevic added 17 points in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Slovakia vs. Sweden

Vedran Bosnic, Sweden Head Coach
"It was a very tough game. We allowed the team of Slovakia to make only eight points in third quarter, and I think we won the game in this quarter."

Martin Pahlmblad, Sweden
"I think we had a pretty good start. We managed to have a lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The same happened with Romania. We made stupid decisions, and this is something we need to learn from."

Milan Černický, Slovakia Head Coach
"We didn't manage to play 40 minutes. We still stop playing in the third quarter. They managed to make a run of 16 points, and it was hard to come back. However, our players showed character and played hard until end of the game."

Andrej Kuffa, Slovakia
"We did some stupid mistakes. It was a good game. It was decided by a few balls."
