GAME REPORT

Italy Cruise To Victory Against Swiss

Pietro Aradori (Italy)
Pietro Aradori had 17 points and five assists

Italy secured a comfy 90-60 win over Switzerland at home on Sunday to extend their winning streak in Group G of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round to two games.

The Italians lead the three-team group while Switzerland, who were playing without the injured Clint Capela and Greg Brunner, have dropped to 1-1 in the standings and Russia stand at 0-2.

Switzerland scored the first basket in Cagliari on Sunday but Italy used a 13-0 run to gain control over proceedings, reaching the end of the first quarter with a 22-8 lead and never looked back.

Italy took advantage of the fact the Swiss were forced to play without their starting frontline duo and out-rebounded the guests 42 to 30.

Most importantly however, the Azzurri shared the ball with remarkable efficiency, dished out a collective 24 assists and as a direct result they had five of their players scoring in double digits.

Alessandro Gentile and Pietro Aradori paced the Italian offence with 17 points and five assists each, while Luigi Datome finished with 15 points.

For Switzerland, Dusan Mladjan had a game-high 18 points and his brother Marko added 13 points and six rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Italy vs. Switzerland

Simone Pianigiani, Italy Head Coach

"A very serious game of my players, you can't win in Europe by 30 points if you don't play a great defence and you don't stay focused on the game. We won with our defence in Moscow, today we have repeated the same good attitude against Switzerland. Now we want to win the next game with Russia in order to qualify for EuroBasket 2015 and to celebrate our success with the wonderful people of Cagliari. Now we have a week to work hard, we will be prepared for Russia."

Gigi Datome, Italy

"We had a good approach, this kind of game can be dangerous if you don't start with intensity and determination. I am particularly happy because I was born here, in Sardinia, and Cagliari's fans showed their love for me and for this team today. We know that next game with Russia won't be easy but we are ready and certainly we don't want to stop now this positive moment."

Dusan Mladjan, Switzerland

"Congratulations to Italy, they played a great game and their victory is clear: maybe, with Capela and Brunner we could have some opportunities but I think that Italy is better than us, they have a lot of players of international level. We are a young team, after this loss we are not out but we must win against Russia next Wednesday."

Petar Aleksic, Switzerland Head Coach

"With Capela and Brunner injuries we lost something like 40 points and 20 rebounds. It was very difficult for me to prepare this game because Italy is a great team and tonight the Azzurri played strong defence and great offence. We didn't start well in the first quarter and then it was very difficult to recover from 20 points down against an experienced team like Italy. Congratulations to them, great game."
