GAME REPORT

Perfect Latvia Break Romanian Hearts

Janis Blums (Latvia)
Janis Blums led a balanced Latvian offence with 15 points

Latvia concluded their EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round campaign on a 6-0 record after claiming an 82-70 road win over Romania, who are now left with minimal chances to qualify.

The Latvians finish in first place in Group F and Romania in second spot with a 4-2 record, but with a goal average that, midway through the conclusion of Day 6 action, is unfavourable compared to second-placed teams in the rest of the groups.

The two teams alternated dominant stretches during the first half and the half-time buzzer found the scores tied at 37.

Latvia returned after the break however with a renewed impetus on the defensive end, kept their hosts to just four points during the opening six minutes of the third quarter, and Dairis Bertans and Kristaps Janicenoks drilled consecutive triples to give the guests a 54-41 lead with 4:22 left to the third buzzer.

Romania showed some signs of a reaction with the start of the final frame and Mihail-Octavian Paul reduced the gap to 64-59 with 9:28 left on the clock, but that was as close as they would come.

The veteran Janis Blums sunk back-to-back three-pointers, the second with 6:57 remaining, to put Latvia ahead 72-59 and Romania had no energy left to dispute the result any longer.

Blums finished with 15 points while Bertans and Janis Strelnieks added 13 points apiece for the winners.

For Romania, Vlad Moldoveanu and Mihai Silvasan each collected a joint game-high 18 points in a losing effort.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Romania vs. Latvia

Marcel Tenter, Romania Head Coach
"Unfortunately, I am disappointed that we didn't win. It was a very hard game, with a great physical and mental consumption. We met a more accurate and precise team and their shooters killed us, especially in the third quarter. Sure, I'm disappointed with this result, but we knew the value and potential of Latvia. On this night, I expected more on the offensive end, but unfortunately the difference was made by the shooting percentages. In the second half, we had some bad decisions on offence and missed some shots and they scored in important moments. Latvia was better than us and we must work harder in the future to play equally against them."

Mihai Silvasan, Romania
"I'm so sorry for this failure but I'm so proud of my national team, of all my colleagues and coaches. Unfortunately, we couldn't obtain an historical qualification to EuroBasket, after 28 years. We finished the qualifications with four victories but we'll watch the EuroBasket on TV. It's frustrating. We have to keep the positive things of this qualification campaign: our progress, the improvement of our game regarding the last years. We did our best in these two months, we were practicing and playing the games at our best level, but it wasn't enough. It seems that we still don't have the needed experience and maybe the value to fight, game after game, with teams like Latvia, one of the top squads in Europe. That's it, we have to move on. We are so grateful to our fans. They were amazing again."

Ainars Bagatskis, Latvia Head Coach
"It was a very tough and also difficult game. It was very important for both teams. For Romania, to be sure to go on to the final stage, and for us, for two reasons: For the first time in history, to finish the qualification round in first place, without a loss; secondly, the most important for us, to show that we are real professionals on the court and respect the sport. I said many times, every game is important. Tonight we were better prepared mentally, maybe we had a little luck and also we scored a few three-point shots in important moments. I think, we had some good defensive sequences and we controlled the game in the second half with our experience."

Janis Blums, Latvia
"Romania fought unbelievably. I take my hat off in front of these excellent Romanian characters and warriors. We fought also very strongly and we were a little bit lucky a few times, scoring some hard shots. We were mentally prepared very well for this last game, because our goal was to finish these qualifications in the very first position, considering all the groups."
