GAME REPORT

Belgium Punch Ticket To EuroBasket

7. Axel Hervelle (Belgium)
Axel Hervelle had another stellar performance for Belgium

Belgium breezed past Belarus 99-73 on the road on Sunday, to become the first team to secure a berth at EuroBasket 2015 from the 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Belgian Lions have not clinched the top spot in Group D but are now sure of claiming, at the very least, second place in the group with a 3-1 record after discounted results, which is enough to see them through to the big event.

The guests shot the ball exceptionally well from anywhere on the floor in Minsk (finished with 55.2% field goal percentage) and grabbed a 28-16 lead at the end of the opening frame.

Belarus appeared to be able to level proceedings when they came within five points midway through the second frame, but Matt Lojeski sunk back-to-back triples to extend the gap to 38-27 with 4:44 remaining to half-time.

Belgium made sure to keep their hosts at arm's length after the break and Maxime De Zeeuw converted an and-one play with 6:34 remaining in the third to lift Belgium to a 57-43 lead and spark a 12-0 Belgian run.

Axel Hervelle capped it off with a triple 4:46 from the end of the frame and Belgium's lead ballooned to 66-43.

The guests reached the third buzzer with an unassailable 79-55 lead and preserved the margin with relative ease in the final quarter.

Lojeski delivered his best performance for Belgium so far and collected a game-high 28 points on 10-for-14 from the floor, also adding two assists and two rebounds, while Hervelle contributed 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds and Wen Mukubu chipped in with 14 points and five boards.

For Belarus, Aliaksandr Kudrautsau finished with 20 points and Vitali Liutych had 19 points and five boards in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Belarus vs. Belgium

Eddy Casteels, Head Coach Belgium

"It was a really hard game and a very dangerous enemy. We went out from the locker room with an advantage in the score only in the second half of game. We had a really good concentration and also were vigilant, because the enemy can come back into the game at any minute. We try to win every game and it doesn't matter, who is the opponent. We have respect for every team. We will go to Denmark with the purpose to win the first place in our group."

Axel Hervelle, Belgium

"This game was really important for us. We were well prepared psychologically and physically, and everything turned out fine. I didn't think that our team is good in long-distant shots, but today this component of our game was on top-level. Belarus is a good team, and we knew that they are organized, they have a good coach. Belarus play aggressive and with contact. It was the defining game for us, now we are qualified, and we want to be first in group."

Dusan Gvozdic, Head Coach Belarus

"Today Belgium were the better team. They paid much attention to protection. We were mistaken a lot in our attack. The Belgians have very exact players, who shoot well from behind the arch. We have one more game and we should play a good match in F.Y.R. of Macedonia on Wednesday."

Aliaksandr Pustahvar, Belarus

"Belgium is a really good strong European team. We were ready for a difficult game. We knew the strengths and weaknesses of the rival. They played good defence to give them a big advantage, because of rigid protection they escaped and made easy points. Ahead we have one more game in F.Y.R. of Macedonia and we won't despair."
