Hungary are the lone leaders of Group E in the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round after prevailing 74-73 over Georgia at home in a hard-fought battle on Wednesday night.
Georgia were the only side in the contest to enjoy a double-digit lead, albeit briefly, after they pushed ahead 34-23 midway through the second quarter.
A Krisztián Wittmann triple however with 1:29 remaining to the half-time buzzer brought Hungary ahead 37-36 and the two teams would basically exchange punches for the remainder of the tight clash.
After Viktor Sanikidze had made a lay-up, Zaza Pachulia split two free throws with 3:19 remaining in the game and gave Georgia a seemingly vital 70-64 cushion.
David Vojvoda though, who was superb for the winners, replied with a quick jumper and then Csaba Ferencz emerged as the hero of the night for the hosts, hitting back-to-back three-pointers to turn the tables and push Hungary ahead, 72-70, with 1:02 left on the clock.
After Tornike Shengelia split two free throws, Jermaine Thomas sunk a two-point shot to extend Hungary's lead to 74-71, with 35 seconds remaining.
Besik Lezhava reduced to 74-73 from the foul line and Hungary turned the ball over and fouled Shengelia.
The Georgian forward however missed both his shots from the stripe and the hosts held on in the dying seconds to clinch the victory.
Vojvoda led all scorers with 20 points, Wittmann added 15 points while Thomas finished with 14 points and six assists for Hungary.
For Georgia, Pachulia finished with 19 points and six rebounds and Shengelia had 18 points and five boards in losing efforts.
