F.Y.R. of Macedonia gave up only six points to Denmark in the final 13 minutes of their Sunday clash and pulled away for a comfy 80-46 victory on Day 5 of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

The hosts have improved to 4-1 in Group D and maintain intact their chances of qualification to next summer's big event while Denmark have picked up their fifth loss in as many games.

F.Y.R. of Macedonia established a healthy cushion midway through the first quarter and held a 41-29 lead at the half-time buzzer.

The hosts struggled from long range, hitting only 9 of their 32 three-point attempts, but dominated the boards and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, off which they scored 17 second-chance points.

It was only when they tightened the screws on defence though that they pulled away decisively.

They decided to do so after Jonas Bergstedt reduced to 49-40, with 2:39 remaining to the end of the third frame.

Aleksandar Kostoski hit a triple to increase the gap to 54-40 by the start of the fourth and then another Marko Simonovski three with 7:54 left to the final buzzer triggered a 15-0 run for the hosts.

Andrej Magdevski capped off the burst from beyond the three-point arc to make it 69-42 with 4:48 left on the clock and by the time Tobias Reinholt finally stopped the rot for Denmark on the next possession, the result was essentially sealed.

Richard Hendriks paved the way for the hosts with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds while Simonovski, Bojan Trajkovski and Damjan Stojanovski all chipped in with 10 points each.

For Denmark, Bergstedt finished with 16 points and five rebounds in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: F.Y.R. of Macedonia vs. Denmark

Esben Reinholt, Denmark

"We could feel that they are stronger and physically better prepared. They started getting many open shots, and they made them. I congratulate the winner."

Pieti Poikola, Head Coach Denmark

"Congratulations to Macedonia for the win. They deserved it because they played better basketball. We came here as an underdog, but we had a game plan that we were able to hold at the beginning. Later, our players started to get more exausted, and Macedonia knew how to build on the game and secure the win. At the end they managed to put even more pressure on our players, we made many mistakes and left them easy points."

Andrej Magdevski, F.Y.R. of Macedonia

"In the first half we played pretty badly, that is not the kind of play we like. Into the second half, we managed to get the rythym, the fast game we wanted, and at the last eight minutes we started to look as the team we wanted to be the whole match. That is how we should play during the matches. I want to thank all the fans in the arena, they helped us very much."

Aleksandar Dzikic, Head Coach F.Y.R. of Macedonia

"We did a great job in defence. We can't win with big point-difference against teams that score many points. That's why we need this defence. But to play it, you have to be focused during the whole game. We got a nice win, but again, we made mistakes. I am a coach that points out the mistakes and tries to fix them all the time, no matter the final result. I want my playmakers to control all the things happening at the court. I want my team to be constant during all 40 minutes. I hope we will do that in the next match."
