GAME REPORT

Belgium Beat Denmark, Finish On Top

7. Axel Hervelle (Belgium)
Axel Hervelle collected 24 points and 12 boards for Belgium

Belgium pulled away from Denmark late in their Wednesday Day 6 clash to pick up a 77-63 victory on the road and claim top spot in Group D of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Belgians edged out F.Y.R. of Macedonia for first place in the group but the Balkan team also qualify to the EuroBasket.

Denmark were already out of the qualification race going into Day 6 but wanted to finish their campaign with a win in front of their fans.

The hosts made a convincing case for the first 24 minutes, as they trailed their guests from striking distance, never allowing Belgium to lead by more than five points at the most.

Midway through the third Denmark decided to make their move and Esben Reinholt drilled a triple to spark an 8-0 run that enabled the hosts to claim the lead, 45-42, on a Gabriel Lundberg lay-up 4:04 from the end of the period.

A Maxime De Zeeuw lay-up however, 1:29 from the third buzzer, ignited a Belgian 8-0 run that saw the guests jump ahead 56-50 going into the final frame.

Loic Schwartz, with a lay-up midway through the fourth capped off a 15-5 Belgian burst which gave the guests their biggest lead all night, 71-55 with 4:09 remaining to the final buzzer, and the hosts knew there was no time left to attempt a comeback.

Axel Hervelle came up with a fantastic double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds for the winners and De Zeeuw chipped in with 10 points and six boards.

For Denmark, Reinholt finished with 21 points and Jonas Bergstedt had 16 points and seven rebounds in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Denmark vs. Belgium

Eddy Casteels, Belgium Head Coach
"The most important thing today is that we got the win. It is our fifth win out of six games, and the one we lost went to overtime. We play hard every game and we respect every opponent. We played a young Danish team today, but I am sure that if they keep working they are heading into the same future that we have."

Maxime De Zeeuw, Belgium
"It was a difficult game today; we didn't play our basketball in the first half. We have to give credit to the opponents, they are young and aggressive, but in the second half we started to play our style and our defence. Our defence is our identity and that gave us a win."

Pieti Poikola, Denmark Head Coach
"It has been a tough round altogether and a tough game against a strong Belgium team today. We showed that we can compete, and I am happy with the way we played today. The players showed that they were able to make some tactical changes on the fly, and they showed that they are maturing individually and as a team. We also have to give credit to a strong Belgium team, which showed what they are made of and why they are going to the European championship. Congratulation to Belgium, they deserve it."

Mathias Seilund, Denmark
"We got a good start to the game and played strong and gave it a shot. We got great support from our home crowd. But Belgium showed experience and played tough defence, and we ran out of gas. We have to give them credit. They are a good team and deserved the win."
