Omri Casspi (Israel)
Omri Casspi had a good game for Israel

Israel pulled away from Montenegro in the second half of their Wednesday encounter to clinch an important 80-65 triumph on the road on Day 4 of EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round Group B.

The Israelis, who saw point guard Gal Mekel deliver the first triple-double performance of the Qualifying Round, are now tied with the Netherlands at the top of the group with three wins in four games while Montenegro have dropped to 2-2.

The clash had featured 13 lead changes and seen the scores tied on 10 occasions in the first half but Israel scored the last seven points to go into the half-time interval with a 37-32 lead.

It was a declaration on behalf of the guests of their intentions to break open this tight encounter in the second half and Omri Casspi, with a lay-up 7:09 from the end of the third quarter, gave his team a 46-34 lead.

Israel kept their own on the glass and, with Montenegro shooting just 5-for-24 from three-point range, the visitors had no problem at all at keeping their hosts at arm's length the rest of the way, maintaining the lead at double-digit levels until the final buzzer.

Mekel collected an outstanding 14 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, while Casspi finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.

For Montenegro, Vladimir Dragicevic finished with a game-high 19 points in a losing effort.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Montenegro vs. Israel

Luka Pavicevic, Head Coach Montenegro
"Congratulations to our opponent who outplayed us. We created all the prerequisites that we can play with the courageous and energy issued by the audience, as well as the motivation that we always have to have against great individuals that Israel has on its team. We have allowed an opponent to score easy points, whereas for us, it was going terribly. In the third quarter, we came to a deficit of ten points and it is very difficult to catch up against a quality team like Israel. The defence has not shown enough to be able to stop the attacking opponents. This match as opposed to those against the Netherlands should be forgotten because we lost against quality opponents."

Milos Borisov, Montenegro
"We are sorry that we have not managed to restore confidence and to make amendments for the loss against the Netherlands. That should get us back on track, but we have not succeeded. We still have great chances to qualify for the Eurobasket and we're going to win the last two matches, to be where we belong."

Erez Edelshtein, Head Coach Israel
"In Montenegro, we feel very pleasant and a large number of Montenegrin players wore jerseys of Israeli clubs, including head coach Luka Pavicevic. Large and very important victory for us. We knew it would be hard and I'm glad we were able to achieve our goal. We played great in defence, and we had 24 assists as talking about a team game and the contribution of all players in the great victory."

Gal Mekel, Israel
"A very tough game for us. We have respect for the national team of Montenegro, which is our big rival, and against which we had a lot of problems in previous matches. We had in mind the first game in Cyprus, where we experienced a disappointing defeat. We are very excited about this victory."
