Alex was born in Russia and moved to Israel at a young age. He actually started playing volleyball, and was spotted by accident by Maccabi Tel Aviv's coaching staff during his team's practice. His great size and mobility are a rarity in Israeli basketball, and all of a sudden at the age of 19 Alex held a basketball for the first time in his life. He started individual workouts with Maccabi's staff to learn the new game and step-by-step picked up the game. He moved between the first and second division in Israel until Spanish club Fuenlabrada saw his potential and signed him on a long-term deal. Yet after two years he was back in Israel and last season played his first full season in the top division, coming off the bench for league champions Maccabi Haifa. The call to the national team closes a great circle that started back on a volleyball court.
