GAME REPORT

Sweden Hold Off Slovaks At Home

Joakim Kjellbom (Sweden)
Veteran Joakim Kjellbom contributed 13 points and nine rebounds for Sweden

Sweden held on for an 83-77 win at home over Slovakia on Wednesday to finish in third place in Group F of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

The Swedes concluded their campaign on a 2-4 record while the Slovaks finished bottom of the group with six losses in as many games and consequently both teams knew ahead of their Day 6 clash that they would not compete in next summer's big event.

Sweden wanted to bow out with a win in front of their home crowd and jumped in the driving seat early on, but a Nenad Milosevic lay-up right at the half-time buzzer gave the guests their first lead, 40-39.

Conscious that a defeat by four points or more would see them finish in fourth place in the group, Sweden returned with renewed determination after the break.

Thomas Massamba, with two free throws 5:08 from the end of the third quarter capped off a 12-2 burst for the hosts to give them a 51-42 lead.

Slovakia however were not going to simply go away and kept breathing down the neck of their hosts, until finally a Milan Ziak lay-up on the fast break tied the scores at 73 with 2:46 left on the clock.

Both sides wasted chances to claim the lead until Joakim Kjellbom, with a hook-shot 1:02 from the final buzzer brought the Swedes ahead, 75-73, and sparked a 6-0 run that effectively sealed the result.

Massamba led the hosts with 21 points, Anton Gaddefors added 18 points and six rebounds and Kjellbom chipped in with 13 points and nine boards.

For the Slovak side, Peter Sedmák collected 20 points and Ziak finished with 13 points and six rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Sweden vs. Slovakia

Vedran Bosnic, Sweden Head Coach
"Slovakia showed us in Slovakia that they never give up, that they play hard and give everything they have. We respect Slovakia and today again they showed they're worthy of that respect. They fought hard and I promise that everyone on our team, in the coaching staff were wondering what crazy thing would happen in the last minute. Every game we have played has been so close. What would happen now? I'm very happy that we could stay focused and win the game."

Thomas Massamba, Sweden
"Slovakia fought hard all the way, they pushed us the whole game. But I'm proud that we managed to pull out a win. We kept our turn-overs down; we fought all the way, everyone on the team. We had some great fans that came to support us and it feels really good that we could get a win. This has been a crazy summer and even though we didn't qualify to EuroBasket 2015 we showed that Sweden has a future with all the young players coming up."

Richard Kucsa, Slovakia Assistant Coach
"We played excellent in the first half, but Sweden came out very aggressive in the third quarter and we couldn't really do what we wanted to do. We fought hard, but we couldn't stop Sweden enough. Their point guard Thomas Massamba played very well and shot the ball so well. Congratulations to Sweden."

Marek Kozlik, Sweden
"When Sweden played very aggressively in the third quarter we got on our heels a bit, but we got back and got the game even, but I agree with the coach, Thomas Massamba played so well. He made it very difficult for us to guard Sweden. We were close but in the end they made shots when they needed to. Congratulations to Sweden."
