Greece reached the EuroBasket 2015 quarter-finals after overpowering Belgium 75-54 behind a dominant second half display in Lille on Saturday.
Turning Point: Only three points separated the teams at half-time. But Greece switched to a smaller line-up in the third quarter and this allowed them to beat their defenders off the dribble and create great looks close to the basket. Fotis Katsikaris' side used a 21-3 run into the fourth quarter to establish a 65-42 advantage while Belgium could not recover as they endured nine scoreless minutes.
Stats Don't Lie: Greece were successful with nine of their 13 field-goal attempts during the third quarter thanks to increased penetration and smart interior passing. They scored 12 points in the paint in that time before increasing the deficit in the fourth quarter.
Game Hero: This was a typically balanced Greek display, which in truth, is a key part of the reason they were able to pull away after half-time. Kostas Sloukas' performance did not jump off the stats sheet, as he totalled six points, three rebounds and two assists, but he was particularly effective in the decisive third quarter, as he played all 10 minutes.
The Bottom Line: Belgium's impressive run comes to an end after they came up against an opponent who just had too many ways to hurt them. Greece continue on, unbeaten in six games, and will be delighted with the way they could call on so many different players at different stages in the game to make the necessary adjustments. They return to the last eight after missing out in 2013.
They Said: "We were all scoring evenly, that's what good teams do. Any given player at any given time can have a a big game for us. That's our mindset" - Nick Calathes
