GAME REPORT

Iceland Finish Strong, Down Great Britain

5. Haukur Pálsson (Iceland)
Haukur Pálsson was only one of a number of heroes on an historic night for Iceland basketball

Iceland used a 15-2 burst in the final frame to pull away from Great Britain and pick up an 83-70 win at home, in the game that concluded Day 1 action in the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round.

The hosts looked impressive early on and raced to a 22-10 lead at the first buzzer, but Great Britain quickly regained their composure and delivered an excellent second-quarter performance to tie the scores at 34 by the half-time break.

The British used some of their newly-found impetus to even edge ahead 43-36 on a Daniel Clark triple with 6:34 left in the third, but that would be their biggest lead all night.

Iceland balanced proceedings by the end of the third frame and as Hlynur Baeringsson made it 59-58 from the foul line on the last possession in the period, the crowd at Reykjavik Arena braced themselves for a tight fourth quarter.

Martin Hermannsson and Haukur Pálsson however thought otherwise and combined for 11 quick-fire points in the first five minutes of the final frame, before Baeringsson, with a lay-up 4:55 from time, capped off the Icelandic burst and made it 74-60 for the hosts.

This time around there was no margin for the British to react and Iceland maintained their cushion almost intact until the final buzzer to clinch an unexpectedly drama-free win on the opening night of Group A.

Pálsson was nothing less than inspirational for the winners everywhere on the court and finished with 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Hermannsson had 22 points on 10-for-13 from two-point range and Baeringsson came up with a double-double of 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Pavel Ermolinskij came up with a fantastic 14 assists to go with his seven points.

For Great Britain, Clark finished with 20 points and eight rebounds while Kieron Achara added 16 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Iceland vs. Great Britain

Craig Pedersen, Iceland Head Coach
"We started spectalular. What hurt us in the first half was not so much our half court defence but our turnovers on offence that led to easy points for them. I think we did a much better job of that in the second half by taking care of the ball. Then we kind of got into a nice rhythm all of a sudden in the second half and had some different guys stepping up and making shots and and the game turned around."

Hlynur Bæringsson, Iceland
"We expected to win at home tonight. Our confidence is high and we expected to secure a win. We got a little passive when we got the lead. We made some shots early on, especially Haukur [Pálsson], but cooled off a bit and they started making their shots. I still felt that we were the better team throughout tonight."

Joe Prunty, Great Britain Head Coach
"This was what we expected from the Icelandic team in terms of they are a very good drive-and-kick team, and defensively we wanted to try to contain their penetration. I thought in stretches we did, but overall, particularly at the beginning of the game and then in the fourth quarter we didn't do a very good job of containing their drives."

Daniel Clark, Great Britain
"I'm not going to hide that we're dissapointed but Iceland played better than us, they played very well today, especially in the fourth quarter. They executed their game plan better than us so we have to congratulate them and learn from the loss. We are now in a must-win situation for the next game. We can only think about the next game against Bosnia and Herzegovina at home, we have to have a strong home court performance in front of our home fans and get the victory. That's the only thing we have to do right now."
