GAME REPORT

Iceland Fend Off Great Britain

13. Hördur Vilhjálmsson (Iceland)
Hördur Vilhjálmsson and Iceland were able to defeat Great Britain

Iceland overturned a 13-point deficit in London to claim a 71-69 win over Great Britain and turn Group A of the EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round into a two-horse race with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Bosnians lead the group with a 2-0 record, Iceland have improved to 2-1 while Great Britain are in third place with three defeats in as many games and out of contention for qualification to next summer's big event.

Great Britain had a slight edge over their guests in the first frame and appeared to be breaking away when they used a 15-4 burst in the second, which Myles Hesson capped off with a dunk 3:34 from half-time, to grab a 37-24 lead.

After the interval, Iceland began to chip away at the deficit and a Logi Gunnarsson lay-up with 1:15 remaining in the third frame ignited a 10-0 run for the guests bridging the third and fourth quarters.

Hördur Vilhjálmsson hit a triple to make it 59-54 for Iceland with 8:47 remaining to play, but Great Britain had enough left in the tank for a last assault.

Daniel Clark converted an and-one play 1:32 from the final buzzer to reduce to 66-65 but Jon Stefansson sunk two free-throws to restore Iceland's three-point lead, 68-65.

Great Britain missed on the other end but Hesson came up with the put-back to reduce once again to just one point, only for the cool-as-ice Stefansson to reply with a triple and make it 71-67 for Iceland with just 44 seconds on the clock.

With three seconds remaining, Great Britain fouled Vilhjálmsson who missed both his free-throws and Clark picked up the rebound, but his desperation triple did not drop in.

Stefansson, who was playing his first game for Iceland in this Qualifying Round, paced the winners with a game-high 23 points and Vilhjálmsson added 17 points and five assists.

For Great Britain, Kieron Achara finished with 15 points and seven boards and Clark added 14 points and eight rebounds in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Great Britain vs. Iceland

Craig Pedersen, Iceland Head Coach
"We said at half time that we just had to keep fighting. There was a segment of a few minutes where we rebounded the ball in defence really well. We got a little bit of a flow in offence and got ourselves back in the game."

Jon Arnor Steffansson, Iceland
"I'm proud of my team - every member of my team - especially in the second half. We were a little bit flat in the first half. Coming into the second half, we rebounded the ball really well. We just showed in that spark, that intensity that defines this Iceland team."

Joe Prunty, Great Britain Head Coach
"We played a great first half and I'm proud of the way we battled. We started the third quarter by conceding too many offensive rebounds. We played a decent job of playing solid defence but that second chance hurt us. Offensively, in the fourth quarter, I felt we rushed a few shots and had a few too many turnovers which made it a little more difficult for us. But overall, I was proud of the way we battled."

Drew Sullivan, Great Britain
"I thought the guys were locked in and concentrating on what we were trying to do tonight. It was just a spell in the third quarter that we let Iceland loose a little bit and they started making shots. When they missed, they had offensive rebounds and second chance points. Obviously, they started feeling good about themselves and when you let a team like that in, it's always an uphill battle. Overall, I felt our performance deserved a win."
