GAME REPORT

Estonia Stay Alive With Win At Portugal

8. Janar Talts (Estonia)
Janar Talts sparked Estonia with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds

Red-hot Estonia earned an 85-64 triumph on the road against Portugal in Group B of the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round.

Estonia did not take good care of the ball in Coimbra and committed more than double the turnovers of their hosts, but whenever they managed to hold on to the ball long enough to take a shot, they made an argument almost impossible to argue against.

The guests converted 64.3 percent of their shots from two-point range and even hit 12 triples on 25 attempts, while Portugal only improved their two-point field goal percentage to 46% late in the game, and even missed nine of their 23 free throws.

Their excellent shooting enabled Estonia to jump into the rider's seat right from the start and they led 29-16 at the end of the opening quarter.

Portugal managed to match their guests offensive output in the second quarter, but Estonia pulled ahead again after the interval and their shooting accuracy enabled them to extend the lead to 22 points, 61-39, on a Reinar Hallik three-pointer 2:37 from the end of the third quarter.

It would take an enormous improvement on the offensive end for Portugal to turn the tables, and it never materialised, so Estonia's lead did not drop below 15 points at any point until the final buzzer.

Guard Rain Veideman hit four of six triples and led the Estonian charge with 18 points, forward Janar Talts collected a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds and Gregor Arbet chipped in with 15 points and five boards.

Cláudio Fonseca had a team-high 17 points for Portugal in a losing effort.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Portugal vs. Estonia

Portugal head coach Mario Palma
"Estonia was absoluty out of the normal, they were shooting from long distance and making every shot against that there's nothing to say. We missed a lot of shots on our home court and it's complicated. We have some players with a lack of experience in international games and that also makes a difference. We need to win by many points in Netherlands to have any chances, it won't be easy."

Portugal player Claudio Fonseca
"It was a really important game for us and we couldn't make it, we missed a lot and they had a really good percentage in three points now we need to be focused and think about the last game against Netherlands in the best way to improve our game."

Estonia head coach Tiit Sokk
"It was a great game for us, our three points work very well. We tactically prepared especially on defence and we succeed. We play hard and Portugal missed a lot of shots. I think it was a good game for the audience and we are proud because we did have a great game."

Estonia player Rain Veideman
"It was a better game than the first one and we succeeded on offence and defence. We made some changes in our defence witch worked really well and our three-point-percentage was really good. This were some of the reasons we won."
