GAME REPORT

Austria Outgun Luxembourg

24. Rasid Mahalbasic (Austria)
Rasid Mahalbasic had yet another great game against Luxembourg

Austria scored 66 points during an 18-minute stretch bridging the second and third quarters and cruised to an 111-77 win over Luxembourg at home, in EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round Group C action.

Luxembourg scored the first four points in the second frame to tie the scores at 21 and, at that point, probably even the most optimistic fan in the local crowd could not have predicted what the following 18 minutes of the clash would entail.

Austria, as if someone suddenly had turned on a switch, upped their tempo, provoked turnovers, found easy baskets in the open floor (31 fast-break points) and started hitting their shots with admirable precision to score 66 points in two nine-minute spurts either side of the half-time interval.

By the time the Austrians shifted back into lower gears, there was one minute left to play in the third quarter and they were leading 87-50.

Big man Rasid Mahalbasic registered a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds for Austria and five more of his team-mates scored in double digits.

Christopher Jones finished with a game-high 22 points for Luxembourg in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Austria vs. Luxembourg

Werner Sallomon, Austria Head Coach:

"Our 111 points are a satisfactory result, but 77 opponent ones are too much. In the upcoming games, we need to stay focused and reduce the phases during which we lack concentration. But taking such a clear win in the first game is definitely something I have to be happy about. It was a very good start into the qualification round."

Rasid Mahalbasic, Austria:

"Today's game was definitely a step into the right direction. I was a good thing that we started off with a home game so I am very confident that we will find a good rhythm for the upcoming games."

Karsten Schul, Luxembourg Head Coach:

"It was the expected hard game against a very good Austrian team which is definitely Group C's favorite. We had some rather good phases in which we managed to execute our game plan. Overall, however, it was not enough."

Samy Picard, Luxembourg:

"We played very well for the first 15 minutes but then we just made too many turnovers which gave Austria some easy points. The game was decided in quarter three and Austria's really good performance from the three-point-line during this phase. However, we tried to fight until the very last seconds of the game and remain positive for the upcoming game against Switzerland."
