GAME REPORT

Bulgaria Claim First Win On The Road

22. Adrian Gutoaia (Romania)
Adrian Gutoaia of Romania and Kaloyan Ivanov of Bulgaria battle for the ball

Bulgaria pulled away from hosts Romania in the second half to clinch a vital 84-68 victory on Thursday, in Group A action in the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round.

The Bulgarians scored the first seven points in the encounter but Romania swiftly balanced proceedings, went ahead 21-20 at the end of the first quarter, and took a five-point lead early in the second frame.

The two opponents exchanged blows until the end of the period but Bulgaria reclaimed the lead on two free-throws by Branko Mirkovich 51 seconds from the half-time buzzer and the same player drilled a triple on the first possession in the third quarter to give his team a five-point cushion.

Bulgaria not only remained in the driver's seat until the final buzzer, but came up with a swift reply every time their hosts attempted to reduce the gap, as Romania were able to get easy baskets in the open floor (16 points in transition) but struggled offensively in five-on-five possessions.

The guests maintained a healthy cushion until approximately three minutes before the end of the clash, when they used an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 82-66 and avoid having to go through a stressful finale.

Bulgaria's Deyan Ivanov led all scorers with 27 points and added eight rebounds, his twin brother Kaloyan finished with 15 points and five boards, but the winners owe a lot to the brilliant display of the sharp-shooting Mirkovich, who collected 20 points and dished out a game-high six assists.

For Romania, point guard Rares Mandache had 18 points and shooting guard Brice Kabengele picked up 11 points in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Romania vs. Bulgaria

Romania head coach, Marcel Tenter:

"Unfortunately, it was a game that we lost because of our team's childish mistakes. We lost rebounds, which we should not normally lose; we gave a lot of wrong passes in critical moments of the game, which we should normally not give; and Bulgaria team responded with a very high accuracy, especially in the last two quarters. We had good periods, but they alternated with moments of weakness. In the future, it's important for our players to learn that a game has 40 minutes to the final whistle. Instead of 26 minutes, or 38..."

Romania player, Andrei Mandache:

"It was a tough game, against a very good opponent. The game was very open, at least until the middle of the 3rd quarter, when, unfortunately for us, we lost its control. I think Bulgaria managed to win in the end because they dominated us in an area where we worked a lot lately: rebounds. After the break, quite inexplicably, we relaxed and team didn't miss the chance to turn the tables [on us] and win the game.

Bulgaria head coach, Konstantin Papazov:

"It was a very hard game, but I am very happy because in the end we won. Romania is a very good team and they have improved their basketball, especialy in the last couple of years. Today, we started very good in the first period, with a 7-0 run, but after that we made some easy 10 tournovers and Romania scored in the fastbreak. At half time we discussed [that] in the locker room and fixed all our offensive problems. The Romanian coach tried everything in the 3rd and 4th period - substitutions, changings the defense many times, pressure on the court; but we were good in shooting and we won the game. I want to congratulate my team, but also the opponents for their game."

Bulgaria player, Deyan Ivanov:

"We've never played before against Romania so the result of this first game was very important for us. We didn't know our opponents at all and that's why, in the first half, they surprised us. But we kept our confidence and [in the end] we won with a good margin of 16 points. Next week we'll play against Iceland, another unknown team for us. We are looking for another victory which can take us closer to qualification."
