GAME REPORT

Netherlands Exit With a Win

6. Worthy De Jong (Netherlands)
Worthy De Jong led the Netherlands on Friday with 17 points

An early 16-0 run helped propel the Netherlands past Portugal 71-53 in the final Group B game of the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round on Friday.

Estonia had already sealed the semi-final spot from this group ahead of the final game but the Netherlands finished on a positive note with a straightforward home win.

The visitors started well however, holding a 13-7 lead after some good work inside by Miguel Miranda on a put-back.

But this would be as good as it got for Portugal as Worthy De Jong drove to the basket for a lay-up that would spark the decisive 16-0 sequence and open up a 23-13 lead in the hosts' favour.

The advantage was reduced to five (28-23) in the opening stages of the second half after Portuguese forward Joao Gomes completed a fast-break and hit a three-pointer in the moments before, and after, half-time.

But a quick fire 9-0 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter allowed the Netherlands to re-establish control.

The final stanza was an even affair but by this stage, holding a 52-33 lead, the hosts could hold their opponents at arm's length and with the Portuguese shooting a paltry 29% from the field, they never really looked like hitting back.

De Jong finished as the game's high man on 17, in addition to picking off an impressive six steals, while Gomes was the only Portugal player to score in double figures, contributing 10 points.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes: Netherlands vs. Portugal

The Netherlands Coach Toon van Helfteren
"This was not a game with great basketball, but my team surprised me once again with their work ethic and their ability to bounce back."

The Netherlands player Worthy de Jong
"We have a young team, but we worked hard and we showed a lot of heart. Our chemistry has carried us through all of our games."

Portugal Head Coach Mario Palma
"We had a lot of problems tonight. So in the second half I played with different players. With mainly young players. We lack the European competition. But look what happened: we shot the ball better, we rebounded better, we played a better game. These young players will be back next year. And they can carry us through the next four years. That is the positive outcome of the second half."

Portugal player Jose Barbosa
"I want to thank the Dutch organisation. We had a very good stay in Holland. I really don't know what else I could say about the game, other than that we lost to a better team. Congratulations to the coach and the players of Holland."
