GAME REPORT

Iceland Take First Win At Romania

6. Jakob Sigurdarson (Iceland)
Jakob Sigurdarson and Iceland tunred the trip to Romania into a success

Iceland defeated Romania 72-64 on the road on Wednesday to pick up their first win in Group A of the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round and leave their hosts with minimal chances in the race for top spot in the group.

Romania scored the first two points in the encounter, but by the time they found their way to Iceland's basket again, five minutes into a catastrophic for them first quarter, their guests had claimed a 16-2 lead.

The hosts recovered but Iceland was by now well into the driver's seat and held a 38-28 advantage at the half-time interval.

Iceland could not maintain for long their fantastic defensive display of the first quarter and Romania reduced the gap to just three points, 45-42, on an Adrian Gutoaia lay-up with 2:50 left to play in the third quarter.

But Jakob Sigurdarson and Haukur Pálsson combined for 11 points until the end of the period, the latter drilling two big triples, to give Iceland a comfy 56-45 lead going into the final frame.

Romania, who suffered all night at the hands of the aggressive Icelandic defence and committed 19 turnovers, allowing their opponents to find easy score in the open court time and time again, were unable to mount a comeback attempt at the finale, despite their superiority on the glass (rebounds 46 to 35).

Pálsson was crucial to Iceland's win as he went 9-for-16 from the floor and collected 24 points and Sigurdarson added 15 points; for Romania, Gutoaia finished with 19 points and Titus Nicoara had 15 points and five rebounds.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Romania vs. Iceland

Iceland head coach Peter Okvist
"It was a very tough game. I am very happy for my team, we made a good game tonight. We were able to bounce back after a poor performance against Bulgaria and I think that was the key of this victory. We played very good defence for pretty much 40 minutes which translated in a lot of fastbreak points. Also, in difficult moments, we scored quick in agressive offense from outside. We prepared very well this game and it was important that we have trust in us. Once again, I congratulate my team to this important victory."

Iceland player Haukur Palsson
"We came out strong in the beginning, then Romania stroke back in the second quarter. We had to keep running and play our staff and I think we did it pretty well. Romania is a tough team, but we scouted them very well. We wanted to get a win and we knew all we had to do to get it. We are still hoping for the qualification, Romania can do a very good game in Bulgaria and also we can win our games at home. This evening, I'm happy for this victory!"

Romania head coach Marcel Tenter
"Basically, we finished the game in the beginning, in the first quarter, when Iceland took a 15-point-lead. We tried hard to balance the game in the other three quarters, but they have managed to preserve their lead. Unfortunately, we didn't have consistency in the game at times when we managed to get close to them, to 4-5 points. We missed a lot in crucial moments and our opponents responded very well, they scored easy points on fastbreak or from distance, with 3-point-shots. We weren't inspired when we had to play our centers and this is why it disturbed us in start of the game. Iceland responded very well in the first 10 minutes and took the lead incredibly easy, without reaction from us! We have to work very hard in the next period and we must eliminate stupid mistakes on defense and on offense, in order to lay claim to this level."

Romania player Adrian Gutoaia
"We didn't expect to lose! This is why I am very disappointed about the final result, but Iceland played better than us and deserved the victory in this evening. We made mistakes on defense, we lost too easy a lot of rebounds, were we must clearly dominate them. We didn't play like we planned on offense, especially with our centers, we didn't find the best solutions, we missed a lot and had many turnovers. Because of this, they caught us often on fastbreak and scored a lot of easy points. They started very well in the first period, with a 15-point-lead, and unfortunately for us we couldn't manage to come back."
