GAME REPORT

Dragicevic Seals It In OT For Montenegro

20. Vladimir Dragicevic (Montenegro)
Vladimir Dragicevic delivered when it mattered most, finishing with 20 points and nine rebounds

Vladimir Dragicevic missed the last shot in regulation but poured in eight points in overtime to lift Montenegro 70-64 over Bulgaria in a thrilling clash on Day 2 of EuroBasket 2015 2nd Qualifying Round Group B.

Montenegro are now the lone leaders of the group with two wins in as many games while Bulgaria, who have lost two very tight encounters, are bottom of the standings.

Bulgaria looked in superb form early on and jumped to an 18-6 lead on an Asen Velikov fast-break lay-up with 3:10 remaining to play in the opening quarter.

With Sead Sehovic finding success from beyond the three-point arc however, Montenegro quickly clawed their way back and tied the scores at 24 with 6:26 left to play in the second quarter, on back-to-back mid-range jumpers by Dragicevic.

Bulgaria went into the locker rooms with the slightest of leads, 33-32, as now the two teams would trade baskets for the remainder of the way.

Vladimir Golubovic, with a hook shot 2:14 from the end of regulation, gave the hosts a 60-58 lead but Stanimir Marinov replied immediately with a jumper and tied the scores at 60 with 1:57 to the fourth buzzer.

Both teams decided it was a good idea to win this from long range but as consecutive three-pointers fell short on either end of the court, Montenegro passed to Dragicevic with two seconds left to the end of regulation but his shot did not drop in and the game went into overtime.

Nikola Ivanovic scored the first basket in the extra period to pull Montenegro ahead 62-60 and, after Nikolay Varbanov reduced to 62-61 from the foul line, Dragicevic decided it was time to go from villain to hero.

The Montenegrin power forward sunk the last four buckets for his team to steer them to victory, underling the hosts' superiority close to the rim, which ultimately tipped the balance in their favour.

Montenegro got 50 of their points in the paint while they also out-rebounded Bulgaria 50 to 37 and scored 21 vital second-chance points.

Dragicevic finished with a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds, Ivanovic added 12 points and Golubovic chipped in with 10 points and seven boards for the winners.

For Bulgaria, 19-year-old Aleksandar Vezenkov had 14 points and eight rebounds while Chavdar Kostov and Pavel Marinov added 11 points apiece in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Montenegro vs. Bulgaria

Luka Pavicevic, Montenegro Head Coach
"I want to congratulate the players on the victory. Two games in a row, very tough and we achieved two victories. I might have to assume that the victory against Israel may have softened those who have not fully experienced and have not been fully aware of how quickly the next match comes. I think we have not underestimated Bulgaria, but we have underestimated our own strength, because we were tired after the hard trip from Cyprus and also there was satisfaction after the victory against Israel. We achieved a win, but it turned out that we were unable to guarantee stability in the approach."

Vladimir Dragicevic, Montenegro
"A very tough game that we played after a long return from Cyprus. It was very difficult against Bulgaria who we have underestimated after their defeat against the Netherlands. I would like to thank the fans who were great and helped us to achieve this victory, which is a new step towards achieving the goal, and that's a place in the EuroBasket. The most important thing is that we won and nothing else."

Georgi Mladenov, Bulgaria Head Coach
"Montenegro has played the right way in the last five minutes. We were not lucky because we had an open shot for three points 25 seconds before the end, but that's life and we move on. We played well after a very tough match against the Netherlands, which we lost. We had a great opportunity to achieve victory, but I am happy because the players gave their maximum. We knew that Montenegro is strong and watched how they claimed their victory against Israel. We turn to the coming matches, first against Israel in front of our fans."

Bozhidar Avramov, Bulgaria
"We had the opportunity to achieve a very important victory in Podgorica. We lacked a bit of luck to make it true."
