GAME REPORT

Bulgaria Make It Two Of Two

11. Ivan Lilov (Bulgaria)
Ivan Lilov was one of five Bulagrian players to score in double digits

Bulgaria have seized control of Group A in the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round with a powerful display against Iceland at home that secured them an 88-59 triumph, their second in as many games.

While Bulgaria followed up in style on their vital 84-68 win on the road against Romania last Thursday, the Sunday clash was Iceland's premiere in the competition.

Once Bulgaria grabbed a 12-10 lead midway through the opening quarter on an Ivan Lilov lay-up, they started pulling away from their guests with admirable consistency and held a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

The hosts wasted 11 free throws but they dominated the battle on the glass so convincingly, that they out-rebounded the Nordic side 56-22.

Bulgaria collected 17 offensive rebounds and scored 20 second-chance points to make up for their lack of accuracy from the foul line, while their enormous frontcourt advantage also allowed them to take shots close to the rim almost at will, as 50 of their 88 points came from inside the paint.

Five Bulgarian players scored in double digits but interestingly Lilov, a guard, led the way with 14 points, while Deyan Ivanov registered a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and his twin brother Kaloyan also had 12 points, adding seven boards.

Iceland's Jakob Sigurdarson finished with a game-high 19 points and Jon Stefansson had 13 points in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Bulgaria vs. Iceland

Bulgaria Head Coach Konstantin Papazov:
"We didn't expect it to be so easy; we watched some games of this team. We were really serious for this game, we respected the team of Iceland, so this helped us to be very concentrated in the game. We dominated almost all the time. All the players kept the strategy for the game. We have a lot to improve; we had a lot of turnovers, so we will keep on working."

Bulgaria Player Chavdar Kostov:
"We were highly motivated. We had a great preparation for this game. We did our best. The result is great for us, so we are really happy now."

Iceland Head Coach Peter Ökvist:
"Bulgaria played a great game, I congratulate them. The Ivanov brothers did a great job in the low post. We weren't able to control them today. I think rebounding [56-22] is a huge number and it's impossible to win any basketball game with this difference. I am honestly sad; it was bad performance for us. I am sad that we couldn't get close to our best performance."

Iceland Player Jakob Sigurdarson:
"It was a tough game for us. I think we started bad and in the first quarter we got behind with 10 points. Then it was difficult. We were chasing all the time, trying to get back in the game. They made a lot of good shots and we couldn't get close. It was really hard."
