GAME REPORT

Iceland Edge Romania

6. Jakob Sigurdarson (Iceland)
Jakob Sigurdarson lead Iceland to a consolation victory on Friday night

Iceland exited the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round with a win after holding off Romania for a 77-71 home success on Friday.

Hungary had already taken top spot from Group A, and with it a semi-final spot, but you would not have known that from the way these teams went at each other in the final game of the round.

Iceland, who also won the reverse fixture 72-64, made a bright start, stretching to a 22-11 lead towards the end of the first period, off-the-back of a 6-0 run started by Haukur Pálsson's jump shot.

But Romania responded and were level at 34 in the second quarter when Brice Kabengele collected a pass from Titus Nicoara to complete a fast-break.

Jakob Sigurdarson struck back, scoring the final four points of the half to give the hosts a 40-36 edge at the break.

It was nip and tuck in the third quarter as the sides traded baskets but despite more consistent scoring from Sigurdarson, who would finish on 23 points, Romania finished the period down by just one after a late lay-up from Andrei Capusan.

It was up to Iceland to be cool from the free throw line in the final stanza, as Romania applied the pressure, and they were up to the challenge.

As a team, Iceland converted 28 of their 32 attempts from the foul line, included six in succession in the crucial fourth quarter, allowing them to open up a seven-point lead that would ultimately see them over the line.

Adrian Gutoaia scored a team-high 19 points for Romania and Titus Nicoara had 16 and 11 boards but Sigurdarson and co. held off their challenge to close on a win.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Iceland vs. Romania

Iceland Coach Peter Öqvist
"We opened up a big lead and started off great, but then Romania did a good job tightening up their defence to stop our penetration to the basket. They also managed to slow down our transition game so we had to work a whole lot harder for the rest of the game. It was a tight game all the way in and I am really happy that we could finish off with a win in front of this crowd after a really good national team summer."

Iceland Player Haukur Pálsson
"A great win by six points here at home in front of this great crowd. We were a little bit careless after a strong start and gave them a chance to get into the game, but we managed to get the win against a strong opponent."

Romania Coach Marcel Dan Tenter
"We had too many turnovers, 21 turnovers for the game and we shot free throws poorly. In such a close game every posession and every point is very important, especially in the fourth quarter. There we had seven or eight turnovers which practically cost us the game."

Romania Player Rares Mandache
"This was exactly like in the first game against Iceland, we had a very slow start and that was the main problem for us during the entire game. I'm happy to say that we managed to have some good periods during the game and we tried to fight back but in the end some close rebounds and some clutch shooting from them gave them the win tonight."
