GAME REPORT

Belarus Rally To Deny Hungary

4. Pavel Ulyanko (Belarus)
Pavel Ulyanko was one of the main contributors in Belarus' come-from-behind win over Hungary

Belarus came back from a 14-point deficit on Thursday to gift a 79-75 victory over Hungary to their home crowd in Group D of the EuroBasket 2015 1st Qualification Round.

Hungary shot with impressive precision early on and went on a 10-0 run that enabled them to lead 26-12 just before the end of the first quarter and maintain a 14-point cushion with 7:56 remaining in the second frame.

Belarus decided to take more shots from beyond the arc, drilled five triples in quick succession and a daring tree-point shot in transition from Vitali Liutych reduced the deficit to three points, 41-38, with 2:22 remaining in the first half.

The Hungarians still went to the locker rooms at the interval leading 45-41 but the hosts had succeeded in shifting the momentum and, spurred on by the local crowd in Minsk, grabbed the lead midway through the third quarter on a Liutych lay-up.

Once they had taken control, Belarus tightened the screws on defence, gave up only 13 points to their guests in the final frame and even extended the gap to 75-62 with 4:10 left to play in the game.

Hungary did not have enough time or energy left to turn the tables around, but managed at least to reduce the point differential in the final three minutes.

Liutych paved the way for the hosts with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists, center Artsiom Parakhouski finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Pavel Ulyanko and Siarhei Charykau chipped in with 12 points each.

David Vojvoda had 17 points and Balázs Simon contributed 16 points for Hungary in losing efforts.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Belarus vs. Hungary

Sztojan Ivkovics, Hungary coach:

"First of all I would like to congratulate Belarus for the win. As for our team we obviously aren't happy but on the other side I can say that our team is very young and the result was in certain terms positive for us."

Balazs Simon, Hungary:

"Personally I can't be happy with my game because our team has lost. However we will try our best to work on the mistakes and get better for the home game."

Ruslan Baydakou, Belarus coach:

"This is the exact case when neither we nor Hungarian team can be happy about the result as we should have won the game with a wider margin. We also have a couple of young players and we lack more experienced players however the[brining on] the young blood is inevitable."

Vitali Liutych, Belarus:

"Despite being so young I wasn't nervous at all and I think that our team and me personally played a good game today."
