Nikolay Varbanov has done an excellent job so far for Bulgaria as a role player having had limited opportunities to shine. He has taken part in the last three Qualifying Rounds but didn't make it to Poland two years ago. However last summer he showed that he can be consistent at the elite level by playing in all 8 games and making some valuable contributions. He can match up with most players and is a good player for Bulgaria to utilise defensively - in fact he is probably the best defender. While his offensive game has some limitations, he can still be very effective by crashing the boards and working tirelessly to set screens in order to get his team-mates open. At club level he helped his team book a surprise place in the Bulgarian play-off semi-finals and is arguably the most improved Bulgarian player who looks set to be a starter at EuroBasket 2011.
